Fiscal Fast

Don’t spend any cash or credit for a week. That’s the concept of a fiscal fast. Pantry foods become creative entrees, gas gets conserved for travel musts, entertainment is active individual engagement like reading or walking, instead of “being entertained” by a ticketed event. It’s a “use what you already have” kind of philosophy and it’s a great way to become a less voracious consumer. I tried to follow a fiscal fast this week. I’ve cooked some delicious meals and coaxed gas fumes into drives to my local classes. But I’ve also charged a haircut, a vacation flight and hotel, and a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream treat because it HAD to be done this week (yes, even the ice cream was a necessity!). The concept and the reality didn’t align but my awareness sharpened and my superficial spending decreased. I think I will stay on this diet a while longer and discover how trim I can become!
