Whiplash was pretty tight (script, plot, acting). The Theory of Everything isn’t simple or complicated. It’s a story that has brilliant moments and emotional tugs but not a lot of depth. I understand Best Supporting Actor going to J.K. Simmons but not necessarily Best Actor going to Eddie Redmayne. So my current ratings are five stars for Imitation Game, four stars for Whiplash, three stars for Theory, and two stars for Birdman. Still to come are Boyhood, Selma, American Sniper, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Given what I’ve seen so far, why in the world was Gone Girl not nominated? Ben Affleck cannot be that disliked, can he?
